Purse Swap

I got my swap package today from Katrina, and I love it!

Thanks, Katrina! I love the colors and the fabric. Oh, how I wish I could sew. I love the notebook holder, which has tons of pockets for pens. And the purse is adorable. After my last post on purses, I realize that sewing a lining (or a purse) is a lot harder than crocheting. I don’t know if I’m up for that! But I so love how a crochet purse looks with a sharply sewn lining. I think I’ll stick to making animals for now!

Here’s the purse and notebook holder:

I really enjoyed taking part in this swap. It was fun to make something for Caroline, and look forward to receiving my own package. Of course, I forgot to take pictures of the purse I made. I’ll try to post them here or link to them after Caroline receives my package. But I really enjoyed my first swap!

(No pics with this post, as the purse is a gift and I don’t want to ruin the surprise).

I made my first purse, and now I’m thinking I really need to learn how to sew! I love purses. I love crocheting. But clearly, a crocheted purse needs a lining. With lots and lots of pockets. In fun fabric. I must learn how to sew! I keep thinking of all the purses I could make…all the gifts I could give…all the colors and textures and fabrics I could use. I’m thinking of large purses and small (but not too small…I don’t really like small purses!) Stay tuned for this unfolding saga…perhaps, sometime in the next month or two, I’ll learn how to sew a purse lining. But until then, my purse will remain unlined (sorry, Caroline).

Here’s my question: Do you line your purses?

If so, how do you do this? What’s harder, crocheting the purse, or making the lining?

A few new animals

I am working on my purse for the April Swap with Swap Swap Gals.  What fun!  It’s fun on two levels…I’ve never made a purse before, and I’m making one for someone I don’t know.  I’m enjoying this project far more than I expected to!

Here are some animals I made recently:

Frog Prince

This was supposed to be for my sister-in-law’s birthday.  But I wasn’t really pleased with him, so I made her a huge smiley-face pillow instead!  Hopefully I’ll have some pictures to post soon of the pillow.

And here is a fish I made for my daughter, because I wanted to see what would happen if I crocheted with double strands of chunky yarn!  I love the fish, and it only took me 30 minutes to make.  But it’s definitely harder to crochet with double strands.

Things have been really challenging here lately, but I’m finding that crocheting (and prayer) is the most wonderful therapy.  It’s really nice to sit down with some yarn, clear my mind, and let my hands make some fun little animal…or hat…or purse.  Animals, hats, and purses…three of my favorite things!

Slippers, and some fun!

Here are some slippers I made my two girls.

Tonight I sat down with my three kids and explained that I need to make a purse for someone I’ve never met since I joined Swap Swap Gals. How fun! We went and looked at Caroline’s website to see what she likes and doesn’t like. Then we looked at some other crochet websites online. My kids love learning about other people. They think it’s neat that I’ll be getting a package from someone I’ve never met! And I told them that we can pray for Caroline while I make her purse. They think that’s a lot of fun.

We need the fun after this week. It’s been a hard one, with my husband losing a job, my finding out I need to work more, and our car getting broken into. I am thankful to God for our family and friends. And for my crochet…I can sit down with a project or two, and forget about some of our difficulties. I am eager to start working on the purse.

Swap Swap Gals

I’ve decided to join Swap Swap gals to make some friend online and bring joy to others as well! So I need to answer some questions:

Wish List: Swap Swap Gals

Hobbies? Crochet is honestly my only hobby. I’m a 39-year old SAHM (who also works 20 hours per week for my church; though I am thankful to work from home). I love to read, but have never had a “real” hobby until I started to crochet. I also love music, conduct a high school choir at my church, and occasionally teach voice lessons. I have 3 kids, ages 3 – 8, and a husband with amnesia (honestly! But his sense of humor and trust in God helps us to manage) from a brain injury due to severe seizures. So I don’t have much time for hobbies. I do love to cook and bake.

Crafts? None, other than crochet.

Favorite Colors? Depends on what I’m using them for. I like yellow for decorating, green for clothes, and blue to make me happy. Generally, I like anything that is colorful and fun.

Favorite Animal? Dogs! I had a Golden Retriever for 15 years, and now have a wonderful cartoon-looking Terrier mix mutt.

We’ve had a bunny and gerbils, but are finally down to only one pet (the dog). But I do love all animals.

All Dislikes? Beets. Bad language. Whining.

Favorite Candies? Anything, esp. dark chocolate! Right now I’m really enjoying runts that I bought at our dollar store. I love marshmallows, and other really sweet things.

Favorite Smell Goods? cinnamon buns. Lilac.

Other things you may like or may not like? I love mugs. I don’t know why, but I collect mugs and they make me happy. I also love coffee. I like magazines, especially if they have good recipes. I have few dislikes, but don’t like perfumed body sprays, particularly if they are sweet.

So that’s a little bit about me. I’m looking forward to making some online friends who also love to crochet.
